Podcast Explores the Windsor Hum – Detroit’s Strangest Export

Ask someone from Metro Detroit and you'll likely hear a story about the Windsor Hum. The strange sound is a constant nuisance for some residents of the Windsor, Ontario area.

The podcast, Stuff They Don't Want You to Know, which explores a wide range of conspiracy theory and other arcane topics dedicated an episode to the Windsor Hum.

The hum is most commonly described as a low rumble. Often pulsating or rolling like distant thunder.

Zug Island

There is widespread speculation that the cause of the Windsor Hum. A New York Times article on the Hum points to the spot where many look to as the cause of the hum, Zug Island in the Detroit River

The University of Windsor report said the hum’s likely source was blast furnace operations on Zug Island on the Detroit River, which is densely packed with manufacturing. Activists complained that United States Steel, which operates the furnaces, has been uncooperative and secretive. A company spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.

It's the secretive nature of the work on Zug Island that, of course, get the wheels of conspiracy turning.

Policitally, Zug Island is located in the United States, in the city of River Rogue just south of the Detroit city limits where the River Rogue spills into the Detroit River.

The private Zug Island Road is the only way to access the island. Before you reach a bridge to the island are ominous signs from both the US Department of Homeland Security (the island is a short swim from Canada) and US Steel which notes that CAMERAS PROHIBITED and no trespassing with violators prosecuted to the "fullest extent of the law."
